The journey to New York

The worst part of the journey was having to leave the house at 3.30 am by cab to YYJ. Westjet had a nearly two hour delay in Calgary because of an engine problem. The flight was at least an hour late getting into JFK New York. However it did not seem that the US Federal shut down affected the air traffic controllers.

I arrived at the Yale Club after 12 1/2 hours. The trip from JFK is a bit of a culture shock after the quiet life one leads in Victoria. Firstly one takes the Airtrain to the Jamaica station. Then the Long Island Railroad to Grand Central Station. It helped having done it last year. I used my WISE card on my Apple Watch to tap and pay separately for the Airtrain and LIRR. It helped having done it last year.

For those not familiar the WISE card is a great way to pay for things in other currencies as one does not pay credit card fees (which can be 2.5%) and the exchange rate is also favourable to what credit cards charge.

The Yale Club is just over the road from Grand Central Station. I was glad to get to my room and then have dinner at the club before a good nights sleep.
